Meet the talented magicians

Andreia Vieira da Silva

Illustrator

Andreia was born in Lisbon in the 90s. She studied Graphic Design at António Arroio and then Communication Design at FBAUL. She sees in art a way to express herself and she is interested in all artistic areas in general. She doesn’t want to limit herself to an unique style – today she feels “watercolor”, tomorrow “ink”. She draws and paints since she can remember and thinks that speaking in third person is weird.

João Miguel Fernandes

The guy that makes the interviews

When he was young he wanted to be everything, so he grew to be nothing specific at all. That’s why he studied Communication and Cultural Studies. Later on he decided to go for Digital Marketing at EDIT, since organizing music events and making video projects weren’t feeding him. Now a full-time digital marketer in Stockholm, part-time everything else around the globe, João likes cinema like most humans, but he likes to think he is more into it that than most people. He also loves to write and meet human beings that have an out-of-the-box thinking. Casually he likes to meet animals too, but very casually, he usually prefers ice cream.

Joana Vitorino Mendes

The lawyer helping with the interviews

Joana was proudly born in the oldest Portuguese village, Ponte de Lima, even though she always considered herself a city girl. She is currently living in Porto, after spending some time in Lisboa, London, Ann Arbor and São Paulo. Graduated from Law School, she is passionate about traveling, football, politics and cinema (not necessarily in that order). A Gryffindor who likes challenges – which explains why she is helping with the interviews of Matéria Negra, despite not being an artist.

Joana Mendes

Illustrator

While shifting from Industrial and Product Design to Web design and Digital Art Direction, Joana never abandoned her childhood hobbie: No, it wasn’t playing with dolls, it was Illustration.
Music is part of her life, that’s why many of her illustrations were made for music events, but she has another passion: animals, specifically foxes. If you see her in the woods drawing foxes don’t think it’s weird. Her illustrations usually represent a lot of animals, since if possibly she would have a house only with animals.

Joel Almeida

Illustrator

Joel Almeida was born in Aveiro in 1994. He draws since he can remember and still wakes up with papers and pencils across his bed. He has a degree in Art and Design from the School of Education of Coimbra and has an eternal passion for illustration alchemies. He has developed projects in the artistic scope, product design, graphic design and illustration. He considers himself as a chameleon walking on a rainbow in search of his true color. His work is a reflection on this even by the diversity of approaches.

Uma Joana

Illustrator

“Uma”(One) because she has always lived surrounded by other “Joanas” and for still not having find how to be “The” Joana, instead of being “another” Joana. She studied Painting at “Faculdade de Belas Artes da Universidade do Porto” but these days she finds meaning for stuff by illustrating. Has a lot more doubts than certainties regarding her body of work, although she has an obvious fascination by melancholy and “saudade” – maybe, because of that, every time she tries to be funny she fails miserable.

Vanessa Santos

Illustrator

Born in 1990 in Lisbon. Vanessa has a degree in Design in IADE and studied illustration and 2D/3D animation at Restart. These days she works for the agency “The Hotel” as a motion graphic designer and recently she started worked as a freelance illustrator as well. She is really feminist and, by inheritance of her father, she is in love with plants. It’s really common to find both in her work: nature elements and the female body, which she loves to explore with exaggerated shapes, without loosing its beauty and femininity.
